I'm pretty impressed with Tom Dill's work. The Four Ways West Southern Pacific books are really good. Joe Shine's own GN and NP books are well done also.

I'm happy to pay $40-60 for a book. I just expect it to not come dented up or with manufacturing quality problems, which is about what half of my Four Ways West books have come with. Some of it is the USPS "rugby team" that throws media mail packages around like frisbees. The other is those shippers who think a tiny piece of bubble wrap is sufficient to protec the books.
