Economic downturn is one reason for the decline in ridership. The other is the UPRR's craaaaappy handling of the train. Horrible dispatching is one way to describe it. Remember some trains arriving in Reno 12hrs late? Most of those riders have vowed "never again". Some trains were cancelled all together due to the UPRR shutting down the mountain because of 1-2 feet of snow. At that time they refused to fire up the real snow fighting equipment and get the stuff off the tracks.

Having been on the head end of that train countless times, I blame the UP for it's demise.
