I've read in more than one place that if public and private sector professionals with similar educational backgrounds are compared, its the private sector employees who are paid more.

As a public sector professional, I can confirm this is true. An employee I supervised left to go to a private firm. She noted that her salary would be increase substantially.

Among my duties are managing contracts. Based on the wage rates in those contracts, private sector professionals with similar educational backgrounds as me are compensated at a higher (sometimes much higher) rate than me even when they have fewer years of experience.
