I am vacationing up in the Kootenay's and Okanagan areas as I post this. The N&FS had rails pulled all the way up to Fruitvale area several years ago. The dormant line remained with rails intact for guite a few years, with little of no traffic. Does anyone know when the last revenue train ran from the lakeside junction with CP? This junction point as I recall reading was also an interchange point to rail barge service on Kootenay Lk. back in the day. The grade is rails to trails but may remain under BNSF ownership as signs were installed at trail acess points suggesting use at ones own risk with Property of BNSF Railway prominently displayed. These were new signs after the rails were pulled. There was a branch off of the N&FS going S. from Salmo probably to a smelter a few miles down the S.Salmo river. Does anyone know how far S. this went and when it was active? The end of this must have been not too many miles as the crow flies from the end of the former Milwaukie Road line at Metaline Falls, Wa. The country in between is rugged to say the least.
