I often rode from Tacoma to Portland and return, sometimes staying with my aunt down there. This was back in the early-mid 60's at age 10-15.
I answered an ad in Railroad magazine back in 1966 (age 15) and rode to Portland, took a bus to Troutdale and walked 3/4 mile to the guy's house, bought 95 NP and SP steam negs for $35 and reversed the route home. I still have all the NP negs, with some great photos in the bunch. I suppose it would be a lot riskier today, but there were bad people back then too. I never had any troubles though.
I guess we all think the world's a better place when we're young, looking back, but...
