Wow. What a bunch of trolls. Eric: If the railroads in question have grade crossings on public roads, then yes, they are accountable to the FRA. And regardless, they should be following recommended practices even if they are not under FRA jurisdiction. The toy train at Knotts Berry farm will kill you just as dead as the UP. Both of the things you saw on Memorial Day Weekend are things that should not happen on any railroad that cares about its existence or public safety. And as for the nasties on this forum, these are the people, (and more importantly the egos)who make the profession miserable.
Thanks for bringing up a good observation, and as someone may have mentioned earlier in the thread perhaps mentioning what you saw as a concerned passenger to management would be a good idea. If we call ourselves "Railfans" or "Railroaders" then we should be working to keep as many trains running in as many locations as possible, because Railroads are A Good Idea.
