Now you got me looking at Google & Bing maps/satellite coverage ... virtual railfanning archaeology ... and it looks like there's still a vestige of rails for quite some distance south of Birds Landing (or Molena, assuming that's the siding just south of Birds Landing with the old warehouse or packing shed at the south end of it). Though it only looks like *usable* track as far as the tail track beyond the siding. Some of the old trestles and r/w in the swampland seem to still be used for walkways or even Jeep tracks in spots.
Too bad UP apparently tore out everything NE of Dozier. Didn't you do wildflower excursions to a refuge out that way a couple of times?
I kept going across the river and: The trestle to the ferry slip on the Contra Costa side (was that Chipps or Mallard?) still holds a walkway to what looks like a fishing shack. And the air photos suggest that rail is still in place from where the power plant's cooling ponds cut off the line around a wye (with rail in place east as far as the power plant), down through the BNSF/UP underpass (though under water there), and on west and south into the NWS. It even looks like there might be some recently active industry spurs, though I can't tell where the connection would be from UP to the old line -- AHA! Found a connection using Bing (better-exposed photos - kind of muddy in Google - and being able to pan around in the bird's eye view helps) near McAvoy Road in Pittsburg. Of course about the only thing thing the line seems to be used for in the photos (of indeterminate age) is to store a long string of old boxcars. So parts of the SN are still around besides what the museum has, though yours looks like it's by far in the best shape!
Interesting. May have to do this again to plan a trip.
