If you read the pertinent parts of the text, it discusses various types of control stands, including duplex controllers. Scroll down to the page that has a top-view drawing of a duplex controller - it's Fig. 2-5 - to see what one looks like.

Granted, this is for an EMD, but it's the same theory on an Alco C-415.
