I don't think host railroad power on Amtrak is that rare today. I live in the east, but in two trips in recent years to the West Coast, I saw UP power on the Coast Starlight. During a 2009 trip to the San Francisco Bay area, I saw a UP GE unit on the southbound Starlight in San Jose. When I rode the Starlight in August 2012 south from Portland, it had a UP EMD unit.
