At one point in the early 1990s, AT&SF made a public statement that if they could run every Amtrak Train Ontime, in every segment, everyday, Amtrak would be the single largest source of immediate revenue for them.
As far as over Donner Pass in Winter in the 1970s, yes, SP put one of their Engines on the point for snow plowing and ice breaking. The hosepower of the helper engine made little difference.
As far as the power that was used, it is was up to Train Management Personnel to decide what to use.
Yes, BNSF still to this day, takes their incentive payments very seriously.
