I just remember seeing alot of SP power on southbound amtraks train out of oakland in the 80's seemed commonplace at the time.

In 1990 after Christmas I boarded the Coast Starlight in San Jose on the way to LA with one very dead f-40 another barely supplying power, pulled by one very dirty and worn out tunnelmotor complete with malfunctioning gyralight.
