Basically the whole project reeks of being a boondoggle whose primary purpose is to reward political supporters, contractors, consultants and suppliers - rather than to fulfill a real need.
As far as today's engineering geniuses - they will try to reinvent the wheel, rather than apply the lessons learned over the last 180 years of rail transportation in this country, and a rich engineering heritage that succesfully operated 80-100 mph trains at a profit 90 years ago with "antique" equipment.
It would be far more reasonable to build out, improve and speed up our existing rail passenger network first.
We will have to face the political reality of needing to condemn land for a dedicated right of way at some point in the future. High speed passenger trains don't mix well with 16,000 ton two-mile long freights.
