I find it puzzling that High - Speed Rail is so common in Europe, where distances between major metropolitan areas are relatively short. Yet here in the Western U.S., where major cities are 300 to 400 miles apart, High - Speed Rail is non - existant. I know the European Rail systems have the advantage of being newer than our own, thanks to the Eighth Air Force and the Marshall Plan, but what gives ??? Is it our love of the private automobile and the Interstate Highway system ??? Is it due to Lockheed and Boeing ??? Or is it The MONEY ??? European countries accept HSR as a legitimate use of their tax dollars, as opposed to more miles of highway. Of course their Railway systems are mostly government - owned as well. Is the notion of HSR in the Western U.S. an idea that's Fifty Years too late ???
