OK fine. Fix this problem for me: I make frequent trips from an SF suburb to a town east of Pasadena, which take me 5 1/2 hours to drive one way door to door, getting 30-33 mph at 70 mph in my 22 year old car (and the "ruling grade" is uphill all the way to Grapevine). I looked into flying door to door, but when adding up the times necessary for public transit to SFO, going through airport security, plane to LAX, public transit to my destination, I would have to allow for 4 1/2 hours minimum, one way, not counting missed connections. My car allows me to make my own schedule, public transit doesn't. So I always drive even though I would prefer not to.
HSR will take longer than flying (those intermediate station stops), which makes it expensive boondoggle because while it may make for a dazzlingly short running time between downtown SF and downtown LA, especially when compared to the current San Joaquins and Starlight, it completely fails to take into account the additional travel times and complexities involved with getting to and from those two downtown points.
Improving the BFD-LA running times for the San Joaquins with a faster and shorter line would be the best way to go, although at most it would shave slightly more than 2 hours off the schedule. So you go ahead and spend your tax money for this HSR boondogle and leave mine out.
