Thanks, and something to remember about the "timetable" - it doesn't actually tell you when the trains will run (except for the passenger timetable listings which are a snapshot of 2008). It tells you what the station names and locations are along the route. Freight trains generally don't run on any particular schedule, at least not one that's widely published, and even if they did it would change frequently based on the amount of business and how important it is. Most railfans, if actively checking a line, listen in on a radio (some areas can be heard online via railroadradio.net) to find out what the dispatcher is sending their way, and the timetable can help with identifying the mileposts, control points, and the like that get referred to.
Happy back-window railfanning! I kind of envy you with a view, in the mountains, etc. My view at this time of year is trees and radio/TV towers, and in the winter a freeway also shows up. Of course, I seldom have to deal with snow ...
