As noted already,catching a train on Stampede in daylight this time of year can be a challenge. Today, Sat. Dec. 15, 2007 ,I spotted an eastbound grain empties going around the wye @ Auburn onto the Stampede Sub @ 11:20 AM. On Wed. Dec. 12, '07, I saw a westbound manifest coming into E.Auburn @ 8:45 PM ; in summer this train would have had a daylight run across the entire sub. As WAF noted, A westbound crew, from Pasco to Ellensburg, will often flip & return on an Eastbound within their 12 hour day. Eastbound crews from Seattle or Tacoma must lay over in Ellensburg. It is quite common to see a Westbound train tied down in the siding @ Ellensburg waiting on a rested crew. Since none of the trains that regularly use the line are high priority, I suspect the DS schedules eastbounds off of when westbounds leave Pasco.
