I believe the original SP crew districts were Klamath Falls-Alturas-Wendel-Sparks. At one time, the operating divisions also changed at Alturas. After the WP trackage rights and crew district consolidations it was Klamath Falls-Wendel-Carlin? Winnemucca might have been in there for a while?
My impression is that the Eugene hump originated the loaded trains on a somewhat predictable steady basis. Wendel was an away terminal (except for the locals) and the empties back to Eugene ran whenever they showed up and a crew was rested.
Alturas was a huge railroad town at one time, now the railroad really doesn't mean much to the local economy. My understanding was this was the most successful and last use of Locotrol II (8300/8350 class SD40T-2).
