Hunting is a term that goes back to the first days of interurban cars if not earlier. It always was a problem with car operation above about 30 mph. BART made extensive studies of the problem by focusing a video camera with recorder on trucks while in service. A wheel contour was devised experimentally that minimized hunting. I saw one BART video about thirty minutes long with no sign of any hunting at any speed.
