Interestingly this effect has been observed the other way around. When speeders run on CWR corrugations have been observed to develop on the running surface of the pressed steel wheels. These corrugations do not develop running on lower quality rail. Relatively speaking speeders only spend a small percentage of thier time on CWR so there is not a big body of data on this effect. I have seen these corrugations on the rear wheels where the axle is solid but I do not recall if I have seen them develop on the front wheels where the axle is differential.
