So why did BART go to cylindrical tread? Was there a hunting or other problem with the initial batch of conical treads?

Adecdotally, I've heard that some of RT's problem may be a combination of different (cylindrical?) tread profile on the CAF cars compared to (probably standard conical given their age) on the Siemens, combined in the area with bad noise/ride problems with rail that had the wrong profile (?) when installed. After grinding the rail, the ride did in fact improve for a while, and these days it stays OK because they've added 10 minutes to the schedule so 55mph running is no longer required most of the time.
