Hi All,
Just to let you know. The BNSF went to Narrow-banding in July 1, 2013. Almost 6 months before the FCC mandate.
So, when I change the channel in the cab it will now say 076076. Now, according to the general notice. All the radios in the BNSF cabs that have a "NB" stencil on the front of the radio. It will no longer accept the wide-band channels of 7676.
Again, going back to the general notice. The next conversion is scheduled to be at the end of 2015 or early 2016 to the new digital. Now they are issuing handhelds that are NXDN capable. I have heard a few people discuss digital here in some of the hump yards.
A friend from the telecom department was telling me that the AAR is possibly researching the European Railroad's radio standard of GSM-R.
The reason for the research was due to the bandwidth the railroads are going to need for all of the data they need to get to the trains. (PTC, ETMS and Engine Monitoring)
