I wonder whether it would not be better to burn this gas in power plants, and electrify the rail lines…

It is known that a bigger power plant running at its optimum has a higher efficiency, and is also cleaner. Now considering that locomotives operate the majority of the time at idle (which is not really their optimum working point), an electric locomotive would be even cleaner (after taking into account the power plant's exhaust).

And also considering that the distribution of the C/LNG would become easier (no fueling stations to rebuild), and the higher performance of electric locomotives, as well as their lower maintenance cost, it may actually pay off rather quickly the investment in the electrification. Well, at least for lines which see serious use. It would even open the path to shorter, more frequent, but faster trains, operating according to a timetable…
