Lots of local transit uses CNG. Originally it was because they were lower emission than diesel - though not really, any more, now that Tier 4 diesel is required for transit buses. But another thought that turned out true was the economic one - even at the peak of fuel prices (pushing $5/gal for diesel) CNG was costing the transit people about $2/equivalent diesel gallon. Made the difference between continuing to operate and going bankrupt for several.

Wasn't there a small group of BNSF or PHL (or both) switchers in LA running on CNG or LNG? The air district probably helped pay for them. When diesel prices went through the roof I suspect the railroads were happy to have them despite fueling issues.
