...corroding/bursting fuel lines... Sounds like either a fuel problem or improper installation. Are they conversions to CNG or bought new? I haven't heard of that particular issue as a general problem.

Agree that just hooking up a tank car between the NG-powered locomotives seems to be asking for trouble. If done for real (not as an experiment) it would probably have to be done differently. One thought: road slug with a real frame but the superstructure mostly NG tank?

Line-haul locomotives need the range that only LNG and diesel can provide. So that NG tank is going to be cryogenic. Can be done (has been done) but not trivial. And I suspect it'll take a lot longer to refill than the time a diesel fuel stop takes.

Some heavy-duty trucks in limited markets are now using LNG. Haven't heard how it's working out. LNG in transit buses has had many equipment problems - most places use CNG and work around the operational limitations. CNG is a Regular Production Option for most transit bus builders.
