I lived across the river from the gravel plant in the early 1970's The plant made
a fair amount of noise which eventually brought the wrath of neighbors down on the
gravel plant. I believe the plant processed rock from the area left over from the gold
dredging in the area from before WWII.
The FAIR OAKS branch never crossed the American River. The branch ended on the
south side of Bridge Street, I believe the name of the Southern Pacific depot was
"Bridge Street". Loads out of the rock crushing plant were regular until
the plant closed down, not sure what year that was.
My Grandfather lived in Fair Oaks, I recall him telling me that the Fair Oaks
kids would ride the "Doodlebug" from the depot into Sacramento somewhere for
high school in the 1920's. I assume the described transportation by my
Grandfather was probably McKeen cars?
If you notice the new Sunrise Bridge has a light rail lane set aside on the
east side of the bridge. I can only assume that long term plans include a
branch going north from CITRUS to Fair Oaks or perhaps Citrus Heights?
