The point that has been missed in this discussion is that except for the Northeast Corridor the population density in and around cities is not large enough to support frequent convenient local transportation. If a family has to wait one or two hours for a local bus that may not make a close connection with a high speed train, they are going to hop into their automobile even though it may cost more money.
