I won't pretend to speak for all "Republicans", but I do know that most of us simply want these transporation projects to pay for themselves via the pay-as-you-go model. If we had our way, all our roads, highways, and vehicular bridges would be paid for from primarily fuel taxes along with compensatory fees from the sales of hybrids, flex fuel vehicles, CNG vehicles, and electrics. There wouldn't be any money siphoned off from the general fund to pay for vehicular infrastructure, nor would the fuel tax funds be siphoned off to pay for mass transit and bike paths. Bike paths would be paid for by some form of bike tax. Mass transit would be paid for via ticket sales, advertising, etc.
It really is that simple.
