It will be an interesting video, when they release the cab camera view......
I've never seen much evidence or studies, from multiple collisions with cab cars, over many years, that cab cars derail any less or more than loco's. If the Big E has such a study it would be interesting to read, and to see how it was done, who did it, and how it was (or wasn't) peer reviewed?
I've seen plenty of loco's derailed by both large trucks and/or even from debris from small vehicles, lodged just right spot. And yes I've seen both locos and cab cars go right through a small truck or car. Once, I even saw the aftermath where a train hit a big truck full of empty plastic bottles, that fortunately exploded like a giant air bag, with luckily no one hurt. I also saw the aftermath when the SP/RI Passenger hit the hay truck at Bassett (Valley and Rivergrade Road in Industry) around '68, and all of the 4 E units and most of the train were on there sides and spread all over the place. I don't believe either the fireman or the hoghead returned to work after that one.
Zark raises an interesting point about a potential flaw. I didn't see the coupler on the tight shots of the cab car, either, which surprised me. If that dropped down and dug in, it could explain why the cab was almost flipped off the tracks and was spun almost 180 degrees opposite the direction of travel, and landed next to, but behind a good part of the rest of the train?
The severity of the track damage also seemed a bit odd to me from the helicopter shots, with little apparent track damage from the crossing, which was the point of impact, to where the loco finally stopped....?
To be blunt, I've always like plows, since they tend to sweep the debris down and out away from the trucks.
The cars appear to have done very well in overall structural integrity and crashworthiness, but I am concerned about them separating and turning over.
