I though everyone would find Brian Peoples’ recent comments in the Santa Cruz Sentinel interesting.
SAFETY HAZARD ON WHARF ROAD AROUNDABOUT
Our Aptos Rail-Trail Triple Crown ladies team had a major accident on the Santa Cruz Wharf Roundabout. The roundabout is designed so the railroad tracks run through the middle - tracks are parallel to roundabout path. This is a very dangerous and poor design. Our friend was hurt badly, required helicopter to Stanford for major injuries.
It appears that the roundabout design should be addressed and we think that the ultimate safety improvement would be to shift Roaring Camp Railroad passenger pickup to under West Cliff trestle. Since this is taxpayer property, may be it is possible to setup a “railroad town” look for greater tourism enjoyment. Since there is no freight train business north of Watsonville, Train to Christmas Town operates from Watsonville to Buena Vista, and any potential future passenger train service would be decades away or probably not economically viable, the tracks could be removed from Beach street for improved safety on roundabout.
