There is an old issue of SP Trainline of the SPH&TS from around 1997 I think that covers this and has the blueprints w/notes and common standards/specifications for sizing, placement and materials. They were white with black letters, none 'engraved' that I know of. Also, Sacramento (CSRM) has these blueprints which you can access by emailing them.
