As an collector and owner of a number of SP station signs and have also checked out the common standards for station signs that were on depots that had distances to SF, elevation etc. I can tell you that they were not engraved and simply painted on. This also goes for signs that were at sidings that simply had the name. Also goes for later signs that were on depots that had station name only.
