Old SP and Subsidiary Station Signs: Were They Engraved?

This is with respect to the standard early to mid 20th century station signs with the 45-cut corners, white with black lettering. The earlier versions had the distance from and distance to terminals etc. Later versions or the NWP interurban or SP peninsula sub had just the station names.
My question to those who have beheld these: were the black letters engraved or just painted on? I have seen a station sign that is engraved with a very shallow relief, just enough for paint I suppose, but it doesn't have the 45-degree cut corners--that iconic shape so familiar to the business traveller of the 1950s as well earlier times.
