in the case of the Siemens Charger and the Cummins SD90, both have heated DEF tanks to prevent freezing.
Running out of DEF is bad, and a very expensive mistake. Even at idle, when the dosers are not spraying, the circulation of DEF cools the dosers, and prevents them from being damaged by the super heated exhaust gasses.
