In working out of SLO if you lived to far away they would call you collect. If you refused to except the charges some crew callers would show you missed call. Most of them would wait for you to call them back. When SOB showed up he made you get a land line. A lot of guys used a pager and would call in but he started having the crew dispatchers showed a missed call for that too. There was no rule in place just him being an A##H*&%. A lot of guys that lived in the calling area had their phones disconnected or got an unlisted number so the crew callers had to drive to their houses to give them a call.
Santa Margarita (438) was toll free from SLO, (543-544). Atascadero 466 & Paso Robles (238)was a toll call. It took forever but I finally got a 438 number and had to pay the mileage charge of about $9.00 a month over the regular bill. Beside my ex had family in SLO so she was on the horn to them all the time. I saved at least $30 a month in toll charges.
