In Esmerelda and Nye County Nevada up and down Highway 95 it was a single party line that went through the operator in Barstow until the late 1970's. After the "ladies" at the Cottontail Ranch finally shut up you might be lucky enough to get an operator. Once I got a Barstow operator who didn't believe me when I told her I was calling from Sarcobatus Flat #2....she went for help before I could complete my call.....have no idea what the board looked like at her end. Virginia City (Story County) had a cord board operator until 1976. I believe the last cord board operator was Pac Bell in Alturas (Modoc County) until 1983. In parts of the old west, the good old days weren't really that long ago.
