West Berkeley had a lot of fairly heavy industry in the past. Many of the plants used railroads extensively.

Also, Berkeley had several electric passenger railroad lines thanks to Key System and Southern Pacific (the Interurban Electric Railroad was an SP subsidiary). Some of those lines were in west Berkeley.
