One day during the Vietnam War I was driving down Cedar Street in Berkeley when I had to stop for a train running north on the Santa Fe. The train was an empty troop train, running back to the Santa Fe yard after unloading in Oakland. A few troop trains were run during that war, with lots of protesters trying to block the tracks. Nobody bothered it after it unloaded.
The consist was a lot of assorted cars from different roads, I guess whatever the government could requisition -- no troop sleepers or other specialized equipment.
That's the only troop train I ever saw, and I think they stopped using them soon afterwards.
