They could put the south end of the ex- SP Modoc branch back and be on an east-west route more easily from Coos Bay than from the NWP, and avoid going north to Portland or south to Roseville before traveling east.
Plus, the Modoc Northern could make some money as a bridge road. Sort of similar to what Phil Anchutes had in mind with Nickel ore in the late 80's or early 90's after the DRGW takeover of the SP, but with the paying freight going the other way.
