I heard that was the way they used to handle suicides on the peninsula commute corridor (Caltrain) back in the old days too. The train was held up only until the ambulance left. The engineer can tell if it is a suicide or something suspicious.
I always feel sorry for the engineer. I feel bad hitting a squirrel. I can't imaginge how bad the engineer feels when they see someone standing in the ROW and are unable to do anything to about it. It was one of the factors that made me turn down a job with Caltrain when it was offered to me.
