I miss the "Colonel", too. Byron could talk sense into some of these folks, and had a credibility that counted down there.
Quite a few little things are going right at LOSSAN, and with SANDAG, that will make a big difference in the future.
OCTA's takeover of administration from a lackluster LACMTA will yield benefits for all three entities operating on LOSSAN, despite inadequate State and Federal resources being spent on the 2nd busiest and most congested rail/freeway corridor in the US.
More/better trains and service are needed from LA to San Diego, including ultimate non-stop, express, and locals, with no less than hourly service any time of the day and weekends, and minimum 15 minute through departures at peaks. Investments in double tracking in both OC and San Diego Co. which are being expedited, will be needed to realize anything close to that vision.
If we had had even a quarter of the "stimulus" and bond funds that have been wasted by the CHSRA fiasco in funding to fund the "shovel ready" list of LOSSAN projects, these would have all been done by now, including in that total the Union Station run through. A project which MTA still apparently has not really made much of a priority in leveraging Southern Cal's critical most cost effective and needed rail project, even when in a favorable negotiating position with the increasingly dysfunctional and politically troubled CHSRA......? Oh well....?
LOSSAN is a tiny glimmer of slow but steady progress on things that will be needed, if we ever want to see the kind of first world rail passenger service, that makes train travel convenient, comfortable, competitive, and cost effective, compared to driving in 20 mph average speed freeway traffic and/or building more freeway lanes in ever more expensive increments. But, lots of folks in decision-making roles don't seem to understand that very well....and folks like Byron Nordberg were great at explaining that to folks.
