Nor is it the same Republican Party my great-great grandfather helped found in 1860. Now that you mention it, Wilson, a Democrat from Tennessee, segregated the armed services. Thirty years later, Truman, a Democrat from Missouri, re-integrated them.
My take on "political correctness" is that it tends to run counter to a basic human trait which I refer to as "us and them-ism", which is intimately related to the notions of family, tribe, nationality, even race, etc. and innate urges to protect them and further their development. Some in the anthropological world feel that without this trait, homo sapiens might hot have come into being at all.
Like drinking booze (another human trait), the problem is getting carried away. The "libtards" etc. have gotten carried away in one direction; the Great Groper and his ilk have run off to the opposite extreme.
In this day and age of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons with their prospects of such widespread and long lasting destruction, a certain amount of consideration and decency toward others is an absolute necessity, including those who you've been brought up to "hate" or "despise" (those people can get carried away too). What makes the situation more complex is that "us and them-sim" enforces a herd mind-set: a few individuals, who happen to be Moslem, blow up a bunch of things, killing people. Herd thinking immediately couples this to "all Moselms are evil", which in stark reality is no different than saying "all Christians are evil".
Given the great variety of human thinking and opinions, to me it's simply a self-initiated case of being polite to others (at lest until they start blowing up things, beating on you, etc.) and then going after those individuals rather than their socio-religious-ethnic-racial group. As for the two polarized nut-case extremes, I don't care for either one.
