I hope and Pray there are enough YES votes in Sonoma to offset the NO votes in Marin. It needs 66 2/3% to pass. SMART and Lillian Hanes came out against the NCRA over the number of freight trains THAT MIGHT run on the line. Instead of working with NCRA/NWP on the PROPOSED number of trains she comes up with some ridiculous figure of 16 trains a day saying it was unacceptable to SMART which freaked out Novato residents. This was one of the items that sparked the suit against the NCRA. The voter poll certainly is encouraging and hopefully most folks will look beyond the fight SMART has picked with NCRA. What is even more amazing is that without NCRA there would be NO SMART. I was involved with the 101 Corridor Action Committee (Marin and Sonoma County) in the early 1980's. The politicians involved at that time wanted to rip up the NWP and out and put buses on it. However, rail advocates like Lionel Gambil, the late Don Edmisten of the PUC, Allen Tacy, Angelo Figone and others convinced the members of the Committee at that time to save the railroad for rail transit. in 1996, before SMART, the NCRA bought the entire line to preserve it for freight and passenger. Its been a rocky relationship to this point. A postive vote will improve that.
