As someone who has not driven in 50 years I can assure you that if the fantasy of self-driving autos ever miraculously morphs into real vehicles where the computer has the drivers license not the passenger there will be way more cars than now or ever.
Why? Because it is not safe to walk the streets as a pedestrian. I cannot tell you how many aholes behind the wheels have tried to drive right up top of me and I follow the crossing rules.
Plus mass transit is not pleasant to ride any more. So everybody is going to try to get their own private vehicle if they can.
More cars, more freeways - you asked for "progress" which accompanies a population explosion and gigantic urbanization.
