Many U.S. States have higher " Grandfather Clause " Gross Vehicle Weights predating the 1956 & 1974 Federal Highway Aid Act regulations, including:
Maine -- 100,000 GVW
Washington & Oregon --105,000 GVW
Arizona -- 129,000 GVW
Michigan -- 164,000 GVW
All of these Gross Vehicle Weights are predicated on the vehicle combination having the correct number of axles, properly spaced and with operational brakes controlled by the driver, on designated routes only, et cetera - et cetera... blah - blah - blah; the rules and exceptions are mind - numbing.
My questioning of BOB2's comments concerned his math in arriving at " 60% heavier trucks " when the California State GVW had only increased 6,720 Lbs ( from 73,280 Lbs GVW to 80,000 GVW ) in 1974, during the initial build phase of The Foothill Freeway.
