Hopefully, accurate investigative facts will be out soon, and we can avoid the rumors as to the causes. Unfortunately, the expected railroad collision results of death, injury and destruction of equipment are present, again.
Don't mean to be a Neanderthal, but I'll take 75 tons of plain old-fashioned all steel PS or ACF gallery and conventional coaches any day. How many more of these encounters will we have to see before the final common sense evaluation of Cab Cars, fiber glass, plastic & a severe lack of steel in so-called 'modern' passenger cars just doesn't work in American railroading, and will always contribute to extra endangerment of both employees & passengers? Can you spell T-A-L-G-O, the original tilting, swiveling half plastic train? Remember the German ICE (?) train, shredding itself in the overpass?
As separated right of ways or split scheduling for different types of service aren't usually practical, passenger equipment that operates on the general network should be constructed with the concept of better equipment integrity & occupant safety in mind while squaring off against the opposing EMD's, GE's, ALCO's, etc. and the trains they pull.
