Metrolink Train No. 111, PULLED by Metrolink Locomotive F59PH No. 856, collided with eastbound (geographic southbound) Union Pacific train UP 8485 East at aprox 423pm. Metrolink train No. 111 had three cars. Metrolink cars 207 and 218, second and third cars, still upright and on rail, appear undamaged. These two cars were uncoupled from train by derailment/impact of collision. Their brakes set when air hoses seperated, which is why they stand railroad east, (south), of the wreck. F59PH No. 856 telescoped into the first Metrolink car. UP SD70ACe No. 8485 is laying on fireman's side. Second UP unit is upright but derailed.
Two six axle UP locomotives involved. UP train was eastbound, (geographic southbound). Both UP locomotives are derailed. Lead unit 8485 is laying on fireman's side. Second unit is upright but derailed. Freight cars derailed and jackknifed around and behind the derailed UP locomotives.
Location is aprox MP 444 just east of Tunnel No. 28, MP 443.9. Tunnel No. 28 is 537 feet long and goes under Topanga Canyon Blvd. This is west of station of Chatsworth in single track in CTC territory controlled by SCRRA/Metrolink Dispatchers in Pomona, CA. Last A signal for UP 8485 East would have been west of the west portal of Tunnel No. 26. Last A signal for Metrolink Train No. 111 was at the west switch of Chatsworth. See Page 74 of Altamont Press California Region Timetable No. 19.
So far 6 reported dead.
Lots of "yellow bees" crawling over the scene.
