When the LACMTA's Red Line "MOS-1" (minimum operable segment) opened in 1993, it went from Union Station, through downtown, connected with the Blue Line, and ended one station beyond, at Macarthur Park Station, at Alvarado, between Wilshire and 7th, where Langer's is located.
The arrival of the subway came just in time, to a neighborhood, once glamourous, that was on the razor's edge of becoming the poster child of "post apocalyptic" "urban collapse", ala "Blade-runner", and quite literally "saved" the neighborhood, and Langer's Deli, from likely certain extinction, with the huge lunch crowd the subway suddenly brought in. So much so that the Red Line was dubbed for a time, the "Pastrami Express".
The pastrami is is great, and cheese blintz's ain't too bad either.
