Very well stated. I think the blogger and many other people miss the point that several of the signals were before the station stop. Clearly the engineer missed the critical red signal and ran through the switch which was lined to take the freight train out of the path of the passenger train. There was an accident, I think on CSX in Maryland near Point of Rocks that was similar with a station stop after an approach signal, and the engineer ran the stop signal right after the station stop. Clearly this is a problem, and while PTC would likely address this issue, in the short term, I think a repeater signal which the engineer can see right past the station would be a very simple solution. I also think a second engineer in the cab may help as an interim step before PTC is installed, a far simpler solution would be to put in repeater signals where a station stop is in between the block signals.
Interestingly, the concept of putting a second engineer on the train which was mentioned in the Trains magazine news bites, sounds intuitively safer, but I believe studies have actually shown, it doesn't really improve safety, as talking with the other person in the cab can be as much of a distraction as texting on a cell phone.
