Regarding hiring more engineers/conductors, they sure seem to be trying, as they have help wanted ads on Indeed all of the time. They are offering up to $44.96/hr. However, with the outrageous cost of living there, as well as the fact that they don't pay into Railroad Retirement, not many experienced engineers will even give that a second thought.
