I'm sure there are 'limits' to almost any infrasturture, but heavy rail uses 3rd rail in the majority of cases. The P&W ran Brill Bullets at high speed using 3 rd rail, as does the Long Island. Pretty high performance. And no catenary to snag, especially in icing conditions.
